Five Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn't Cooling Your Home

July 10, 2020

When it’s a scorching summer afternoon in Norton, nothing feels worse than registering your cooling system isn’t performing the way it is supposed to. The last thing you want to do is schedule HVAC service. But your AC is an exceptionally complex system, so it can be almost impossible to determine what’s causing the trouble all alone.

That’s why HCE Systems Inc wrote this handbook to help you figure out what could be taking place with your AC. Below, you’ll learn some everyday situtations that explain why your place is feeling uncomfortable. And while a couple of these are easy DIY activities, you might need to bring in a professional for HVAC repair.

And if you do, HCE Systems Inc is here for you. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your home in Norton.

1. Your Device Settings Could Be Incorrect

Everyone uses their thermostat a touch differently to work with their specific needs. However, a lot of homeowners make the error of setting their thermostat to “On” rather than “Auto.” Under this setting, the fan in your AC will continue to blow even when you’ve gotten to your set temperature.

This can come off like your air conditioner pushing out warm air, when in reality it’s simply using the fan on a more regular basis than needed. Try switching this setting and determine if things cool off.

2. Your AC Needs Some Cleaning

There are two principal spaces to look for dirt or dust collection when your HVAC doesn’t appear to be operating correctly.

First, examine your AC system’s filter. If you don’t change your filter often enough, built-up dust can make it more labor intensive for air to flow through and cool your house. If your filter is noticeably dirty or dusty, it’s probably time for a change. (And for best operation, you should switch it about once every three months at a minimum.)

If your filter appears clean, head to your outdoor unit. Make sure there’s a reasonable amount of clearing around the unit and clean up plants or debris stuck there. This section of your cooling system discharges the heat from inside your rooms. If the coils outside are congested, you won’t be cool inside.

We recommend scheduling professional air conditioner maintenance yearly to keep your equipment running properly and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your AC is Losing Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the substance that cools the air in your house. It cycles between your indoor and external system pieces to absorb and let off heat, to help your home remain the right temperature. If there is a break somewhere, you won’t be feeling cool again until you set professional air conditioning repair.

Signals of a refrigerant leak include a decline in conditioned air, pricier utility bills, frozen evaporator coils and unusual hissing noises originating from your HVAC.

If you feel refrigerant might be leaking, call HCE Systems Inc for system repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be harmful to your family’s health.

4. One or More Parts Need to Be Replaced

Your system contains a few crucial elements. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If any part is failing, your home comfort is hurt.

Our HCE Systems Inc technicians are certified and experienced in HVAC. They can help you find and repair any issue.

5. Your Whole System Should Be Replaced

If your air conditioner is more than 10 years old, it might be about time to research new air conditioner installation. As your system puts on the years, it unfortunately won’t run as well as it has in the past. And it may be making your house less comfortable.

If your system is newer but still isn’t cutting it, it could be too small for your house. HVAC systems are made in different sizes. An air conditioner that’s not powerful enough simply can’t cool a place the way a properly sized air conditioner can.
